Backyard chickens may be an option in nearby Virden and Thayer, as well as in Springfield and Jacksonville. But it appears it is an ownership perk that won’t be occurring in Auburn at this time.

Last week, Auburn’s Health and Housing Committee discussed the topic of chickens as it pertains to the city’s livestock ordinance. Monday evening, faced with a decision to have city attorney Rusty Reed modify the ordinance, the Council voted 5-3 against the motion.

Those in favor were aldermen Lori Basiewicz, Jason Garrett and Ben Royer. Voting the motion down were aldermen Larry Hemmerle, Rod Johnson, Bill Karhliker, Joe Powell and Tracy Sheppard.
