The Glenwood High School boys soccer program has undergone a significant transition this summer, as assistant coach Kyle Franke has taken over the top job from Tommy Johnson.
Johnson, a 1999 GHS graduate and teacher and coach in the Ball-Chatham School District since 2005, has resigned his positions and is moving out of state with his family.
Johnson’s wife, Emily, has been offered a job at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia.
“She has always wanted to pursue her doctorate degree and teach at the college level,” Johnson told the Clarion. “And she’s been chasing me around teaching and coaching for years. She got offered a job as a graduate professor of nutrition, and they are going to pay for her to get her doctorate. You can’t find a better opportunity, and it’s too good to pass up.
“I can’t be happier or more excited for her and our family, but there is also a lot of sadness and angst,” Johnson continued. “I’ve been here all my life, and that’s hard to leave, especially when that’s all you know.”
