Cam Patterson’s line drive triple to deep center in the bottom of the ninth scored Grace Ballard and gave the Glenwood Middle School girls softball team a dramatic 7-6, walk-off victory over Pleasant Plains Monday night in the IESA Class AA Chatham Regional title game.
The Titans (11-3) have advanced to Saturday’s Chat-ham Sectional against Gillespie (20-2) at 11 a.m. at GIS. The winner of that contest advances to the Class AA state tournament at Champion Fields in Normal Sept. 27-28.
•Against Plains, the Titans led 3-0 after two innings and 6-2 after five. But the Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the sixth, and the game extended into the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ballard reached on an infield single and Joey Hobbs popped out. Patterson followed with her blast to center to set off the celebration.
Glenwood finished with 12 hits and three errors, and Plains had six hits and three errors. Cassie Feld started for GMS and pitched seven innings, with Sophie Skaggs pitching two. Skaggs relieved Feld in the sixth, and Feld came back in the eighth and finished up.
