The Glenwood High School girls volleyball team stretched heavily favored Rochester to the limit in last week’s Class 3A Jacksonville Regional championship match.
The Titans (18-17) eventually lost in three sets, with the Rockets (30-6) advancing to the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional.
The Rockets won the first set 26-24, with Glenwood responding to win the second set 25-22. The Rockets opened up a big lead in the third set and finished off a 25-19 victory.
The contest was in stark contrast to the teams’ matchup in the last week of the regular season, which Rochester won handily 25-19, 25-15.
•In the third and deciding set, the Rockets opened up an 8-4 lead following a sideout block by Mary Gegen, kill by Grace Petty and two service points from Kaylen Reed.
Laura Kaiser had two kills to try and stem the tide, but kills from Tatum Outlaw and Emma Jiroutek helped Rochester move the lead to 12-6.
A kill by Maya Black and block from Emma Huseman kept the deficit manageable at 14-8, but a sideout kill from Outlaw and three service points from McKaylee McKenzie, including an ace, moved the RHS advantage to 19-9.
