The Game of the Week in the Central State Eight Conference provided all of the action, drama and excitement a football fan could take last Friday night at Glenwood High School.
And the fall 2021 season opener saw the visiting Springfield Senators edge out the Glenwood Titans 39-36 in a three-hour epic in humid and 80 degree-plus conditions.
The teams combined for over 900 yards of total offense and 49 first downs, along with four turnovers. And it was the three second-half turnovers committed by Glenwood that proved to be the difference.
“If we don’t do that, I think we win the football game,” GHS head coach David Hay stated. “We’ve got to fix those turnovers, but that doesn’t change the fact of how proud I am of the way our football team played against a really talented team that’s going to do well this season. And we are too, we’re gonna get better from this and continue to improve.”
The Titans took a 28-25 lead midway through the third quarter, but Springfield was able to go in front 39-28 with 8:37 left in the game as GHS was in the midst of committing its three turnovers.
Senior back Jamarion Smith’s one-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run closed the gap to 39-36 with 1:47 left to play. An onside kick by freshman kicker Mia Gerger was recovered by Springfield’s E. J. Pruitt, and the Senators were able to run out the clock from there.
