The Village of Riverton is about to be hit with a substantial rate increase to transport gas to its residents.

The Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company has filed for a rate increase of 400 percent on the transportation of its gas; the rate has not been increased since 1992, according to Mayor Tom Rader, who discussed it at Monday’s village board meeting.

Barring any last-minute settlement, that increase will start on the March bill in Riverton, continued the mayor, who posted a letter publicly Monday before discussing it at the meeting.

The transportation fee is roughly 12 percent of the total monthly bill for natural gas, Rader said, so a customer’s total gas bill is not going up 400 percent overall.
