Rochester High junior Julian Lopez-Arenas Barquero made history as the first RHS player to place at the IHSA Boys Tennis State Tournament.

Barquero, one week after winning the singles title at the Rochester Class 1A Sectional, lost only one match in three days of the State Tournament to finish in fifth place.

As a Sectional champ, the foreign exchange student from Spain received a 5-8 seed and won his first two matches on Thursday. Barquero defeated Mason Beckham of Flora (6-0, 6-1) and Jack Butler of Carbondale (6-4, 6-2) before falling in two sets to Dunlap’s David Wu (6-4, 6-3).
