The Rochester Rockets are back in the playoffs for the 14th straight year and 19th time overall but the 2019 postseason marks a new chapter in RHS football history - for the first time ever, Rochester will play in Class 5A. The Rockets will open the postseason with a home game against LaSalle-Peru Saturday at 3 p.m.

Rochester, with an enrollment of 770, is the smallest school in the 5A field after being on the bubble between 4A and 5A in recent years. The Rockets were the largest school in Class 4A last year. RHS is the No. 2 seed in the 16-team southern bracket in 5A.

By contrast, first-round opponent LaSalle-Peru is the third-largest 5A team with an enrollment of 1217.5. The Cavaliers, who finished 5-4 in the Interstate 8 Conference, are the No. 15 seed. LaSalle-Peru has won three second place trophies in Class 4A in 1978, 1979 and 1980, but is making its first trip to the playoffs since 2009. The Cavaliers have not won a postseason game since defeating Rock Island Alleman 19-7 in the 5A quarterfinals in 2003.
